“Moods are complicated and very much a part of who we are. People would be very boring without them." ― Kay Redfield Jamison (Wikipedia), An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness (NPR)
DBSA Asheville - Magnetic Minds is a peer-run support group for people with mood disorders, specifically depression and bipolar disorder. We hope to provide support, acceptance, information, socialization, and tips & techniques that can be used to manage challenges. No appointments or referrals are needed to participate in our groups. We do not require membership or fees to attend our meetings although a love offering basket is passed at each meeting. Small donations are not required but appreciated. Due to the sensitivity of the issues discussed and for the privacy of our members, participants in DBSA Asheville - Magnetic Minds must be at least 18 years of age.
Painful Historical Stigma!
Did I get an education into the depths of mental illness stigma tonight! I was working on our blog and searched on "psych hospital" in google images.
This is what I saw. We have so much history to confront in our fight for social acceptance and the reduction of stigma for those living with mental illness. There are so many painful historical pictures. Why do these come up first? How do we fight with this as our legacy? We have clearly been punished for our illnesses throughout history and some of these photos could still be taken today. Take a peek and scroll down if you dare. http://tinyurl.com/stigma-hurts-us-all
